Discouraged people tend to have tunnel vision about the problems in their lives. They generally can’t see beyond what is going on in their lives at the moment. I find that this is an extraordinarily easy thing to do. This is probably the easiest and most natural thing in the world to do when you are in the midst of hard times. This is why discouraged believers need other believers to remind them about the blessings of God.
When we encourage people in the blessings of God, we are trying to remind them about all that God has done for them. We want them to lift their eyes above the turmoil and see the goodness of God and all that He has done for them. This won’t always be to remind them about “huge” things God has done. Sometimes it will be the simple things.
James says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” James 1:17 (NKJV) James reminds us that every good thing we have in our lives comes from God. You can point them to the blessings of God that are visible in their lives. This could be having a job that provides for them, in this economy this is a blessings. It could be a family that loves them, not everyone has this. It could be a church they can go to or any number of other things. The point here is to encourage them to see the blessings of God in their lives.
Once the believer gets going with this, they will be able to say as the Psalmist said. “Many, O LORD my God, are Your wonderful works Which You have done; And Your thoughts toward us Cannot be recounted to You in order; If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered.” Psalm 40:5 (NKJV)
A very important part of helping a discouraged person with their discouragement is to get them to see beyond the troubles and see the many blessings God has poured out on their lives. Recognizing the goodness of God that is already evident in their lives helps them to get their heads above water, so to speak, and focus on what is good instead of just what is bad. We must encourage discouraged believers in the blessings of God.
If you are discouraged, take some time today and think about all the blessings God has poured into your life. Don’t just focus on the “big” or supernatural things. Focus on the “small” or ordinary things knowing that every good thing in your life is a gift from God. It may help to get a piece of paper and write these things down. There is something powerful about being able to see these blessings on paper. Once you have a page filled with blessings, take some time and thank God for each of these blessings. At this point, focus your prayer exclusively on praising and thanking God for His blessings
If you know a believer that is discouraged then encourage them to see all the blessings that God poured into their lives. It might even be helpful at this point to tell them some ways that God has used them to be a blessing to you. The idea here is to help them lift their eyes beyond their circumstances to see their great God and the many blessings He has poured into their lives so they will know that their God has not abandoned them in this hard time that has come into their lives.
