One of my all time favorite kids shows is Walt-Disney’s Chicken Little. The movie revolves around a young chicken named Chicken Little. One day Chicken Little started a panic in the small town of Oakey Oaks by ringing the school bell and crying out that the sky was falling. Eventually the people of Oakey Oaks calm down enough to ask Chicken Little what was wrong and he explains that a piece of the sky shaped like a stop sign fell out of the sky and hit him on the head while he was under the big Oak tree in the town square. Unfortunately for Chicken Little, he is unable to find this piece of sky and his father, Buck Cluck, assumes that the piece of sky was actually just an acorn that fell on his head. This causes Chicken Little to become the laughing stock and running joke of the town.
You would think something like that would bring our little hero down but it doesn’t because Chicken Little knows a secret, “Today is a new day.” Yesterday may have been bad, but today is a new day. He may have blown it yesterday but today is a new day. He may have made a huge mistake yesterday but today is a new day. He may have been the laughing stock of the town yesterday but today is a new day.
I absolutely love Chicken Little’s attitude. I’m convinced that this is the same attitude that believers should have. Let’s be honest, there are times when believers blow it. I mean we blow it huge. We look at something on the Internet we shouldn’t look at. We yell and scream at someone on the road. We lie to get out of something. We treat our waiter or waitress badly. We miss an opportunity to share the Gospel with someone. We just blow it.
After we’ve blown it we wonder, “Now what do I do?” When we are setting around in the ditchofamess that we have made through our mistakes, sins and failures, what do we do? Some of us will stay in our ditchofamess. We, rightly, feel guilty about our mistakes, sins and failures and so we just stay where we are feeling bad. Satan knows how to use these times to his advantage. He will come along during these times and tell us how sorry we are. He will tell us we are probably not saved. He will tell us that God is disgusted with us and doesn’t want us to come to Him any longer. Satan will tell us whatever he needs to tell us in order to keep us in our ditchofamess.
Chances are, you know exactly what I’m talking about. In fact, you may be in a ditchofamess today. Should we simply stay in our ditchofamess? Should we wallow in self-pity and guilt? No, we shouldn’t! We should recognize as Chicken Little did that today is a new day.
“This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. Through the LORD’S mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:21-23 (NKJV)
I cannot express how much I love this passage. I get so much encouragement and hope from this passage. If you woke up this morning, it was because God was giving you another chance to experience His mercy and grace. The compassion of the Lord doesn’t fail. His mercies are made new every day. Yes, you blew it yesterday. Yes, what you did was serious. However, God’s grace and mercy is greater than your mistakes, sins and failures. You cannot undo what was done yesterday, but today is a new day. Confess your mistakes, sins and failures to God, receive His forgiveness and experience His grace. Then move out with purpose as a forgiven child of God that is free from condemnation (Rom 8:1).
Today is a new day so don’t make the same mistakes, sins and failures that you made yesterday. Today is a new day so don’t live beaten down by the mistakes, sins and failures of yesterday. Today is a new day so go and live as one who has experience the grace and mercy of the great and awesome God of the Bible. Today is a new day!
