This will probably be my last post for the week as we are going to see my parents for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a great time to see family and enjoy being with them. This provides us a wonderful opportunity to share the Gospel with our family members that may not know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Today and throughout the rest of the rest of the holiday season, pray for God to open doors of opportunity for you to be able to share the Gospel.
This method of prayer is based on the acrostic D.O.O.R.S. Each letter stands for an area of your personal evangelism that you can cover in prayer. The reason that it is based on D.O.O.R.S. is because a “door” in the Bible sometimes referred to an opportunity to proclaim the Gospel to unbelievers (1 Corinthians 16:9; 2 Corinthians 2:12; Colossians 4:3; Revelation 3:8). An open door is an opportunity to share the gospel with someone that has not trusted in Jesus Christ as his or her Lord and Savior.
Discipline– Sharing the Gospel with others should be the natural overflow of the Christian life. It should be fairly natural for believers to talk about Jesus to others. Our ability to talk about Jesus flows from the fact that He is God who came to earth, died on the cross for our sins, rose from the dead on the third day and now calls us to come to Him for salvation. The person and work of Jesus inspires us to tell others who He is and what He has done.
At the same time, sharing the Gospel with others requires discipline on our part. We need the discipline to look for the opportunities that God provides. We need the discipline to take the opportunities that God provides. We need the discipline necessary to turn our conversation toward spiritual things so that we can present the Gospel to those we encounter. As ambassadors for Jesus Christ (2 Cor 5:20) we must discipline ourselves to look for and take opportunities to tell people about Jesus. Pray for God to give you the discipline to share the Gospel faithfully with unbelievers.
Opportunities-The Bible clearly teaches that God wants all people to be saved (1 Tim 2:4). Therefore, God will sovereignly work to provide opportunities for believers to share the Gospel with unbelievers. The book of Acts is filled with “chance” meetings that provided believers the opportunity to share the Gospel with unbelievers that wanted to hear the message about Christ (Acts 3:1-10, Acts 8:4, Acts 8:26-40, Acts 16:11-15, Acts 16:25-34, Acts 17:16-34). The God that provided those opportunities then, is the same God that can and will provide opportunities now.
Pray for God to give you these kinds of opportunities to share the Gospel with others. Pray that God would prepare unbeliever’s hearts to receive the Gospel message. Pray that God would create the right circumstances where sharing the Gospel wouldn’t seem forced. Pray for God to send people into your life that need and want to hear the Gospel. You can even create a list of people you want to see saved and then pray for God to give you opportunities to share the Gospel with them. Pray for God to give you numerous opportunities every week to share the Gospel with someone.
Obstacles-Every believer that doesn’t share their faith on a regular basis has at least one reason why they don’t. These are hindrances we have that keep us from being faithful in sharing our faith with others. It could be that we are afraid of sharing the Gospel. It could be that we don’t feel we know enough to share the Gospel. It could be that we doubt the power of the Gospel to change lives. It could be that we honestly don’t see the opportunities to share the Gospel that come into our lives. Whatever the obstacle is, there is a better than average chance we know what that obstacle is.
Spend some time and make a list of the obstacles in your life that prevent you from sharing the Gospel. After you’ve made this list, pray for God to enable you to overcome this obstacle. The Bible says that many times we have not because we ask not (James 4:2). Perhaps this obstacle is an obstacle simply because you haven’t prayed and asked God to break it down. Pray for God to overcome these obstacles and give you courage to share the Gospel with others.
Requirements-The word requirements refers to certain qualities that believers need to have so they can faithfully and effectively share the Gospel with others. One of the main requirements you must have is that you must understand the absolute lostness of all humanity apart from Jesus Christ. This includes the good moral person, our family members, our friends, our neighbors and anyone else we may know or come into contact with. They are by nature lost and separated from God. This rule is without exception. To reinforce this in your mind read Ephesians 2:1-10, 2 Corinthians 4:3-4, Revelation 20:11-15 and John 14:1-6.
One of the main requirements to faithfully sharing the Gospel is being totally convinced about the lostness of all humanity apart from Christ. We must not start making excuses for this person or that person. We must understand that everyone apart from Jesus is lost and hell bound. “These things are not pleasant to think about but they are true, and we ought to think about them until our souls are on fire to save people from the awful condition of utter ruin in which they now are, and from the destiny of eternal shame and despair to which they are hurrying.”
Another requirement to faithfully and effectively sharing the Gospel is that you genuinely love people. When I really love people, I cannot bear the thought of them dying lost and going to a Christless eternity. Everyone that has ever been used by Jesus to be a powerful witness has had a tremendous love for others. I think this is extremely critical.
It’s the kind of love demonstrated by the great American evangelist D.L. Moody. Someone once went to D.L. Moody to ask him why his ministry was so effective. He called them over to the window, had them look out on a city park, and asked them what they saw. They responded that they saw families playing, people walking their dog and generally, just things you would see in a park. They asked him what he saw and with tears in his eyes he said, “Souls, precious souls that will spend eternity in hell without Jesus Christ.” Pray for God to give you the requirements necessary to faithfully and effectively share the Gospel with others.
Spirit-All of our effort in sharing the Gospel will be fruitless unless the Spirit of God enables us and moves in their hearts. The Holy Spirit is the only one who can convince a sinner of their sin, their guilt before God, their utter lack of righteousness and their desperate need for Jesus Christ (John 16:8). No one will ever come to Jesus Christ apart from the Spirit of God drawing them to Him (John 6:44). Salvation is always a work of God. It is the Holy Spirit that regenerates someone and causes them to be born again (Titus 3:1-6, John 3:1-8).
It won’t matter how capable of a speaker you are if the Holy Spirit isn’t convicting, drawing and saving the unbeliever. Pray for the Holy Spirit to enable you to share the Gospel clearly and to work in the unbeliever’s life to convict and save them.
Today begin to pray for God to open doors of opportunity for you to be able to share the Gospel.
