Heaven Is Restricted

He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:7-8 (NKJV)

But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.” Revelation 21:27 (NKJV)

Right here in the middle of this positive, beautiful description of heaven, God gives us a list of some who won’t be there. Why does God include this info?  Perhaps it is to show us that the sin which has cursed and ultimately destroyed this world will NOT be allowed into the next. Perhaps it is because God in His infinite knowledge knew that a day like ours would come when the majority of the world wrongly assumed they were good enough to go to heaven. The hard fact of the matter is that not everyone will be in heaven. Let me explain what is listed.

Cowardly-those who feared man more than God. This is why Jesus said, “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 10:28 (NKJV) The fear of man keeps people from doing the will of God. When this happens it is because we fear man more than God and the cowardly will not be in heaven.

Unbelieving-those who do not believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God the Savior of the world. Those who reject Jesus Christ and His death upon the cross for their sins. Those who profess Christ, but live hypocritical live and show by their sinful behavior that they do not really believe Him (Titus 1:16).

Abominable-those who are more like the world than they are like Jesus. Their desires are more for sin and the things of the world than they are for the things of God. Their lives are more characterized by the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life than they are by love and devotion to God.

Murderers-those who kill and take the lives of others. If we take Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount in to account, it would also be those who are filled with hate (Matt 5:21-22).

Sexually immoral-those who reject God’s standard for sexuality and embrace the worlds. This is huge for us to get. Our world tells us and our children that God’s standard for sexuality is outdated and should be rejected. However, those who take this mindset are not a part of the Kingdom of God and will not be in heaven.

Sorcerers-one of my commentaries said this was, “those who engage in astrology, witchcraft, devil worship, spiritism, seances, palm reading, fortune telling, and all other forms of false beliefs that claim to reveal and control one’s fate, life, and destiny.”[1]

Idolaters– those who worship idols. This would include manmade idols made as well as those conceived in one’s mind. This means they have an image of what God is like and worship and follow that image instead of following God as He has revealed Himself in Scripture.

Liars-those who are not truthful. They speak lies and they live lies.

We are told that these people will ALL have their part in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone. We also see in verse 27 that no one who causes and abomination or a lie will enter this city. Only those whose names are written in the Book of Life will enter this perfect city. No one skates by. People come into this city through the bloodstained cross or they don’t come at all.
