But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23 (NKJV)
The Fruit of the Spirit is best seen in difficult times because it is only in the difficult times that we need the Holy Spirit to supernaturally produce this fruit in us.
The type of love Jesus calls on us to show is not fully seen until there are difficult and unlovable people to love (Matt 5:43-48)
The joy of the Lord is most clearly seen when circumstances conspire to steal our joy.
The peace that passes all understanding isn’t supernatural until we are in the midst of a storm.
We are only longsuffering when we are tempted to act in anger.
It is easy to be kind until we want to be unkind.
There is no challenge in being good until our sinful nature tempts us to be cruel.
Faithfulness is best seen and most amazing when we want to be unfaithful.
Gentleness is supernatural only when we want to be harsh.
it is only self-control when we are restraining and urge to do something else.
Anyone can show a measure of these virtues when all is well in their lives but only the Spirit filled disciple of Christ can show all of these regardless of the circumstances that come into their lives.
For the next week or so I’m going to write about the Fruit of the Spirit. I’m going to explain a bit of what it looks like, why it’s important and what we can do to develop it.
Which of these is most difficult for you? Why do you think that is?
