These six things the LORD hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren. Proverbs 6:16-19 (NKJV)
God Hates The Pride Of Man.
“These six things the LORD hates…a proud look…”
If you are like me when you hear “things God hates” your mind goes to things like adultery, drunkenness, murder, you know” big bad” sins. Yet we see here that the first thing Solomon mentions is a proud look. Throughout the Bible God takes a dim view of pride.
“The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate.” Proverbs 8:13 (NKJV)
Here we are told that pride is evil and that it is something God hates.
“For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, Nor shall evil dwell with You. The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity.” Psalm 5:4-5 (NKJV)
Since God is so pure and holy that He cannot tolerate the slightest sin, the proud will not be allowed into His presence.
“For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips, Let them even be taken in their pride, And for the cursing and lying which they speak.” Psalm 59:12 (NKJV)
This verse seems to imply that pride is a motivating factor behind the sin these folks are taking part in.
“Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; Though they join forces, none will go unpunished.” Proverbs 16:5 (NKJV)
“Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18 (NKJV)
God despises pride and the proud will be punished. Much more could be said about this. All in all, the Bible doesn’t seem to have anything positive to say about pride.
God Hates The Telling Of Lies
” These six things the LORD hates…a lying tongue…a false witness who speaks lies…”
A false witness specifically refers to a witness like in a court of law. But I think to stop the application there would be a great mistake. When you take these two together I believe we can see that lying in general is something God hates.
The truth is there is no such thing as harmless or innocent lies. At least God doesn’t think so. He associates lying with the devil.
“You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” John 8:44 (NKJV)
When we lie we are not speaking the language of God, we are speaking the language of the devil. Remember our first encounter with the devil in the Bible? We find him in the Garden of Eden telling seeking to get Eve to eat fruit from the only tree in the garden that they were forbidden to eat from. God had told them that on the day they ate from it they would surely die, Satan told them, “you shall not surely die.” Our first picture of Satan is that of a liar, who is seeking to destroy someone else with his lies.
Think of the focus of truth in relation to God. Jesus said He was the truth (John 14:6), He said that His Word was truth (John 17:17), and He also said that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth (John 16:13). When we bring this to our minds we can clearly see the importance of truth in the life of a believer. When we are not truthful our actions are not consistent with the Savior that died for us, the Word that guides us, or the Spirit that lives within us.
God Hates The Murder Of The Innocent
” These six things the LORD hates…hands that shed innocent blood…”
While we know murder is a sin, I want to specifically point out that Solomon mentions that God hates hands that shed innocent blood. There were several ways this was done in Solomon’s day. There could be wicked judges that condemned the innocent to death. That would apply here. Also, the pagan nations around Solomon often sacrificed their children to their pagan gods. Sadly, Israel would later follow this pattern.
“But they mingled with the Gentiles And learned their works; They served their idols, Which became a snare to them. They even sacrificed their sons And their daughters to demons, And shed innocent blood, The blood of their sons and daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; And the land was polluted with blood.” Psalm 106:35-38 (NKJV)
While we may look at that and think it’s barbaric, and it is, our nation is just as guilty of this sin. Every day thousands of innocent children are sacrificed to the idol of a woman’s right to choose. Since Roe-v-Wade in 1973, there had been over 59,000,000 abortions performed in America. Right now in America there are about 1.5 million abortions performed a year, and about 4,000 performed a day. What is the reason for this many abortions? 95% of them are solely for the purpose of birth control, 1% is performed because of rape or incest, 1% because of fetal abnormalities, and 3% are because of mother’s health problems. As all of this is going on we see the devaluation of human life in virtually all aspects of society. God hates the murder of the innocent.
God Hates The Yearning For Sin
” These six things the LORD hates…a heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil …”
The heart and the feet go together. What the heart plans the feet carry out. I know that What’s in our heart eventually comes out in our lives. That is why the Bible tells us to guard our hearts because what’s in our heart comes out in our lives (Proverbs 4:23). Our actions are only a reflection of our heart.
One reason that sinful intentions and actions are such a problem is that they show we don’t have a proper view of God.
“Sin whispers to the wicked, deep within their hearts. They have no fear of God at all.” Psalm 36:1 (NLT)
God Hates The Stirring Of Strife
“These six things the LORD hates…one who sows discord among the brethren…”
Probably all of us know someone that isn’t happy unless they are stirring up strife. If you have to work with someone like this it makes life difficult to say the least. If it is unfortunate to have to work with someone like that, it is tragic to have people like that in the church. But in many churches there are people that live to keep things stirred up. The stirring of strife says something about our character.
. “An ungodly man digs up evil, And it is on his lips like a burning fire. A perverse man sows strife, And a whisperer separates the best of friends.” Proverbs 16:27-28 (NKJV)
It can be pretty tough to talk about sin, especially if it’s sin we are given to, in terms of God hating it. But that is what we are told. However it is encouraging to know that God knew we would sin even after we were saved, so He inspired John to tell us how to deal with it.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 (NKJV)
If this blog struck home with you in one area or another then you have a choice.
You can get mad and bull up.
You can get discouraged and give up.
Or you can recognize how you’ve fallen and get up.
My prayer is that you will get up, confess your sin and through the grace of God start again
